Michele Dershimer – Color Guard Coordinator/Consultant
michele dershimer – color guard coordinator/consultant

Twenty-three years ago the band director at Lake Howell High School hired me to teach his color guard. I moved up from South Florida and started the Lake Howell Winter Guard program; "Imagination" was born and continued to be undefeated during the three years that I proudly worked with them (1986-1988).

In 1987, they completed at the Winter Guard International World Championships and finished 5th in the nation, the first and only time they completed at this level. During the next three years, I co-directed "Beyond Imagination," an independent winter guard that grew out of LHHS's program. I also taught and/or consulted with many high school color guards in the area while going to the University of Central Florida. Then for the next 15 years, I was the director of the Lake Mary High School Color Guard program. The winter guard was an eight-time WGI finalist, evolving from an undefeated FFCC locally competitive winter guard in 1991 to the 2000 Scholastic A Champion, to the 2002 Scholastic Open Silver Medalist, and finally into World Class.

During the fall, I have judged for the following associations: Central States Judges Association, Florida Marching Band Coalition, Indiana State Marching Association, Illinois State Championship, and Florida Bandmaster's Association district and state adjudicator since 1986. In 2006, I became a Florida Federation of Judges Association movement and equipment adjudicator, accompanied by WGI training.

Personally, I performed with The Alliance of Miami Winter Guard (1983 & '84); The State Street Review, Madison, WI (WGI Gold Medalist 1985 & '86); The Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps (1983 - 1986 (CG captain). For the past few years, I've kept busy adjudicating during the fall and winter seasons and consulting with various programs throughout the nation. I currently teach English IV honors, Humanities I & II honors, and AP Art History at Lake Mary High School, am married to Wil Dershimer (a winter guard drill/show designer and Network Specialist at South Seminole Middle School), and have three grown step-children and an adorable puggle named Renegade (yes, we are Florida State fans).

Tatianna Rivera – Color Guard Instructor

tatianna rivera – color guard instructor
I have pretty much been dancing my whole life, since I was 2. I got accepted into my first competitive dance company when I was 12, and I performed with 2 other companies until I was 17. Along with dancing, singing was another little passion of mine. When I attended Lake Howell, I was a member of the Concert Choir for 4 years and a member for Silver Lining A Capella group for 3 years; being a section leader for both groups and President of Silver Lining my senior year.

When I was entering high school, there wasn't a dance program at Lake Howell, so colorguard was the next best thing, and little did I know that I would fall in love with the activity. I marched in the Silver Regiment starting my freshman year in 2001, took a year off, and came back for my junior and senior years from 2003-2005 (CG captain). After I graduated in 2005, I marched my first summer with Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in the colorguard. The next year in 2006 was my first year performing with The Knights World Winterguard, and I continued for one more season in 2007. I returned to Carolina Crown for the summer of 2007 and aged-out as a Flag Section Leader in 2008.

In the summer of 2006, I took a break from marching Crown, and I started my teaching career at band camps for Lake Howell and Ocoee High School. In 2007, I returned to Gainesville, FL, where I was attending Santa Fe Community College, and continued teaching and started working at Gainesville High School, and soon became the Director of the colorguard for the next 2 years.

After receiving my AA degree from Santa Fe Community College in 2008, I returned to Orlando and transferred to the University of Central Florida to finish my Bachelor's Degree in Health Science. Currently, along with being a full-time student, I am also a dance and flag technician at Freedom High School, and I happily returned to my Alma Mater to teach colorguard.

Stevenson Lumapas has been a member of the best colorguards in the world, both indoors and out: 2002 Carolina Crown, 2004 and 2005 Santa Clara Vanguard, 2006 Silver Medalist Phantom Regiment, and 5 seasons with Independent World finalist, The Knights Winterguard from Orlando, Florida.

As an educator, Steveo has instructed Timber Creek, Cypress Creek, Boone and Freedom High School colorguard programs as well as the University of Central Florida Marching Knights.
